Day One at Pubcon – Opening Keynote
So Scott Stratten (@Unmarketing on Twitter) opened the first day of PubCon South in Dallas with a keynote about how he’s “breaking up” with social media…sorta.
His premise is that the term “media” is conveying the overwhelming message that translates to “marketing” (making the term “social media marketing” kind of redundant).
Scott gave great examples of a Twitter customer interaction failure, a successful engagement and a missed opportunity.
Lots of tweetable content was to be had – such as:
- “we had social media before we called it social media…we called it talking” (via Joanna Lord)
- “If your product sucks, social media only makes it suck more” (via Janet Miller)
- “Be good at right now instead of looking for what’s next” (via me)
- “Social media doesn’t change the fact that building relationships take time” (via Andy Beal)
- “If you want something quick, for no money, the only thing you’re qualified for is being conned” (via Ian Lurie)
- “I don’t care if you don’t like Twitter or Facebook, if your customers are there, you need to be there”
He also said “Don’t have a moron running your social media”, emphasizing that whoever is speaking for you, IS you on social media channels.
Business owners would pay lots of money for what platforms like Twitter give, but because it’s free, people question it.
Another great tidbit was to not have a presence if you aren’t going to be present. He went on to say that engaging with your marketplace is a smart move.
Scott was a fun and dynamic speaker. It was a great treat to see him in action right before the launch of his book!

“Social media doesn’t change the fact that building relationships take time”
That is so true… while social media helps us to connect with others… it does that, help connect. Those who think building relationships doesn’t matter in the social web are VERY jaded and need to realize you are still talking to another person.
